Job overview:
The Librarian is responsible for the effective day-to-day operation of the School Library at Haileybury Almaty and conducting library activities for the Junior School on a weekly basis and for the Senior School when required. He/she is responsible for teaching pupils all necessary library, information and researching skills, so pupils become independent library users as well as delivering Junior School library lessons. He/She provides library and research services, ensuring these are current and accessible to users. He/ She must have a well-developed knowledge of the computerised library management system, including cataloguing, acquisitions searching and on-line bibliographic facilities. He/ She should conduct themselves in an appropriate professional manner at all times to support and foster the aims and ethos of the school.
The Librarian will ensure that the library is:
fully integrated into the academic, pastoral and wider life of the school;
responsive to developments in information technology, communication and research;
accessible, well-resourced and relevant to the needs of pupils, staff and the wider school community;
a welcoming environment which fosters a love of reading, supports pupil progress and promotes independent learning.
the librarian is also responsible for line managing the Library Assistant
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:
DEPARTMENTAL MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP, STANDARDS
Writing a Development plan for the Library Department to support the school’s overall strategic aims.
Establishing and implementing policies and procedures for Library Department.
Representing Library Department to the Board of Experts during Accreditations (Local and International) and prepare required reports, documentations.
Goal setting and cooperative planning with immediate line manager.
Overseeing and support anyone at library and the daily operations of a Library.
Supervising, instructing and evaluating library parent and student volunteers.
Setting and overseeing the policy for pupil behaviour in the library.
Liaising with other Heads of Department on curriculum delivery and library stock.
Supporting the CPD Library alongside the Deputy Head
Developing networks with other library professionals and educational institutions, such as both local and foreign universities and other international schools to expand school’s resources.
Compiling statistics and generating reports as required.
LEARNING AND TEACHING RESPONSIBILITIES
Teaching pupils library, information, research and literacy skills including searching the Library catalogue as well as Internet and other electronic sources effectively.
Utilising the Junior School Curriculm Overview document to design and implement activities that develop capable and independent readers such as book talks to classes based on pupil interest and/or curricular connections.
Sharing information with relevant staff concerning pupil progress, problems and achievements as observed in the Library.
Supporting pupil participation in children’s literary events and author visits, such as World Book Day and other English department initiatives.
Conducting CCAs related to Literacy and Reading such as Reading Clubs as best fits with after-lesson support in the Library.
Organising trips for pupils to local University Libraries as part of English department initiatives in the JS and SS
Supporting the HPA Book Swap initiatives each term, as well as any other events which provide access to pupils and their families to high-quality books in English.
Inviting external local agencies to host book exhibitions and coordinate process related to this.
RESOURCE MANAGEMENT – MATERIALS AND LOGISTICS SERVICES
Managing the annual budget and placing orders of resources for the Department, prepare the budget and provide information to the Heads of English
Ordering materials and services, liaising with the Procurement Manager and local publishers on ordering and delivery issues.
Selecting, acquiring, organising and maintaining library resources to cover the full school community (including staff).
Keeps media collection up-to-date by systematic weeding.
Reviews and maintains technology needs of the Library and systems.
Arranging the effective retrieval by systematic indexing, classification and cataloguing of all library resources and disseminating information on those resources to staff and pupils.
Ensuring there is an efficient retrieval system for users.
Developing and maintaining cataloguing procedures.
Maintaining an accurate inventory of resources.
Promoting the library resources within the school by preparing bibliographies, making attractive displays making pupils, teachers and parents aware of resources.
PHYSICAL AND VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENT
Planning the designing of the physical and virtual library space, liaise with all the needed agencies and relevant groups of people both external and internal.
Informing pupils, teachers and parents via school’s official virtual communicating sources such as Class Dojo, WhatsApp and ISAMS.
SAFEGUARDING, SUPERVISION AND WRAP AROUND CARE
Uphold the school’s safeguarding policies and procedures at all times.
Supervise pupils using the library during the school day and ensure appropriate behaviour, safety and conduct.
Provide after-school library supervision for pupils who remain in school until 5.00pm as part of the school’s wrap-around care arrangements (on a rotational basis with the Library Assistant)
Ensure that pupils in the library at the end of the school day are supervised appropriately until collected or released in accordance with the school’s pick-up protocol.
Follow all safeguarding and pupil release procedures carefully, ensuring that pupils are only released to authorised adults or in line with agreed school arrangements.
Maintain accurate awareness of which pupils are present in the library during after-school provision.
Communicate promptly with relevant pastoral, administrative or safeguarding colleagues if there are concerns regarding collection, supervision, pupil welfare or late pick-up.
Share responsibility for after-school library supervision on a rota basis where more than one librarian or member of library staff is available.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Maintain awareness of professional trends and emerging technologies and assesses applications for potential implementation.

Provide ongoing evaluation of services and materials.
Establish effective working relationships with professional colleagues.
Set a good example to students through presentation, personal and professional conduct.
Participate in meetings at school, which relate to the curriculum for the school or the administration or organisation of the school, including pastoral arrangements.
Have a working knowledge of whole school policies and procedures. Departmental policies should be guided by whole school policies.
Keep up-to-date with current educational developments and practice.
Undertake other duties as the supervisor may reasonably direct.
Requirements to candidate:
Fluent English;
IELTS certificate (6.5 or higher overall band) is desired.
