POSITION PURPOSE
A highly skilled and talented professional who helps diners to select wine that pairs perfectly with the meal. The professional should have exceptional taste and exemplary customer service skills. A sommelier has an understanding of wines, its composition, how it’s made and how it affects food on the menu. The Sommelier is an Ambassador of wine and spirits world of The St. Regis Astana.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Responsible for ordering, receiving, inventory and organizing wine for all departments
- Oversee all wine purchases and cost management
- Oversee the wine of the month selection, introduction of new vendors, wineries, etc.
- Assist guests and members during the dinner service with wine recommendations and selection for perfect pairing with the dinner, decanting of the wine and wine service
- Develop a training program for team members to improve their knowledge of wine tasting and wine service in order to maximize the understanding of wine specific to the departments and proper service techniques including glassware, pour levels, storage, beverage pairings and the ability to understand guest preferences
- Ensure that all wine is served in proper glassware and is kept in a proper condition
- Maintain all beverage lists to be accurate and up to date
- Maintain all wine inventory updated and reconciled
- Promote all wine events if necessary
- Responsible for developing an annual budget for the wine sales for each fiscal year
SPECIFIC JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities and be able to explain and demonstrate that he or she can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Must have an extensive knowledge of wine
- Must have knowledge of how wine is supposed to taste, using personal expertise and education about grape varieties or regions along with harvest times, climates, soils and the overall winemaking processes
- A strong knowledge of food and beverage pairings
- Solid understanding of pricing, budgets and cost controls

Education:
- Sommelier certification is a preference.
Experience:
- Maximum 3 years of experience in a similar role related to hotels preferred.

- All employees must maintain a neat, clean and well-groomed appearance per standards.
